As Sira walked up the path, the occupants of the nearest dwelling were outside getting their fishing nets ready. It was the same men who had taken her across the river. They chuckled to themselves, and Sira realized she was leaving the dwelling of another man early in the morning. It was obvious what was on their minds. She gave them a shy smile. It was better they think that than something else.

She wound her way up the path to Kree’s dwelling with a heavy heart, wondering if she and Harq would ever find peace. After everything they’d survived, it was exhausting to think they might be in as much danger now as they’d been in the mountains. She entered the dwelling, weary, and looking to curl up next to Harq and get some rest.

She found him sitting on a stool. Kree was standing over him. She had a wooden comb in one hand, laughing with glee as she brushed the knots from his curly red hair. Harq’s skin hung loosely off his face, and his eyes held dark lines underneath them. But the eyes themselves had changed. They seemed brighter, more alert. He smiled that great, goofy smile upon seeing her. “Sira!” he said with a throaty growl. “It is morning, and I am sitting on my own.”

She ran to him and wrapped his arms around his wide shoulders. Tears welled up in her eyes, but they were tears of happiness. Harq embraced her with a feeble grip.

“Sira, you cry? What is wrong?”

“I am just so glad to see you,” she said with a whimper.
